Our Grandmother's know how

How can the furniture be made to shine?
In a hardware store purchase flax oil and turpentine. Mix in equal parts with vinegar, and then shake. With a cloth apply all over the furniture and rub it dry. Use another soft cloth to bring out the shine.
Our furniture will shine more if we use a store bought shine solution and add a teaspoon of apple vinegar to it, apply this all over.
How to remove the varnish?
In equal parts combine water and vinegar, dampen a cloth with this solution and gently rub the furniture. With a clean cloth dry it easily.
How to make carved furniture shine?
In this case the furniture polish should be applied with a soft bristled toothbrush or a paint brush instead of a cloth.
What to do if the seat of our rattan furniture looks worn out?
The seat of a rattan chair should be doused with water, and then left in the sun to dry. Once it is completely dry apply a thin layer of inexpensive skin cream, which does not have any colour, and let the furniture soak it up, so it doesn't dry out.
How to remove stuck on paper from the wood?
Never start scraping it with a knife! In drops dispense oil onto paper, let is soak through, and with a soft cloth rub so the furniture does not stain. Repeat until the paper comes off.
Old stickers should be covered with vinegar. Leave it on till it soaks through, then with a soft cloth remove sticker.
If the surface of the furniture is scratched…
Common rule: always follow in the direction of the veins when fixing!
Walnut furniture: peel a fresh hazelnut, cut it in half, and rub into the scratch.
Mahagony furniture: the scratch can be eliminated with dark brown pencil, or brown wax after which it should be sealed.
Red mahagony furniture: with a fine paint brush apply the Betadine to the scartch.
Maple furniture: with a cotton ball apply a mixture of equal part Betadine and methylated spirit. Let dry, then cover with wax and polish to a shine.
Ebony wood furniture: either use black shoe polish, eyebrow pencil, or black coloured pencil to fix the scratch.
Teak wood: very gently rub surface with metal cotton and after treat it with a mix of flax seed oil and terpentine.
Light wood: if the scratches are treated with clear shoe polish, they become invisible. This is true for shiny surfaces. The scratches dissapear if rubbed with a walnut half.
All scratches dissapear if treated with white vaseline. Leave on for 24 hours and polish into the wood. The leftover can be taken off, and polish the furniture in the usual manner.
Bigger scratches can be covered up with matching, good quality, colour chalk and then coated with see through nail polish.
How to remove water stains from out furniture?
Lightly soak a cloth with water, and apply some toothpaste. Use this and rub the stains, for tougher spots apply a water and baking soda solution.
Make a paste from butter or mayonnaise and cigarette ash. Apply it to the stain, then wipe with a wet cloth and apply varnish.
From varnished furniture removing water stains by rubbing the stain with petroleum is very effective.
For older water stains on varnished furniture, first should be treated with a combination of salt and cooking oil, then wipe clean after a few minutes, finally rub petroleum till it shines.
Another good solution is using cigar ashes (cigarette ash won't work!) and cooking oil, and lighter stains should be covered with it. Use cork to apply solution.
And any other types of stains?
From varnished, light coloured furniture, table tops the best way to remove fruit or wine stains by heating a few buns in the oven and rubbing the stains with them until they disappear.
Any paint stains can be removed from furniture by soaking them in hair oil.
How to clean marble surfaces?
Sprinkle some salt on a freshly cut lemon. Gently rub the surface stain, not to hard as it can harm the stone's shine, and rinse with soap and water.
A mixture of water and baking soda can be applied onto the stain. After a few minutes, rinse with lukewarm water.
For tough stains: place the marble in direct sunlight. If that is not possible, heat the stained area for an hour with a heater (sun lamp is no good!) Then apply a whitening solution, can be purchased in most hardware stores. Repeat till the stain, or discolouring is gone. In some cases, this can take days. Finally wash with clean water and apply a special shining wax.
